If you decide that you need to help a charity and indeed an animal in need, then you should generally have lots of time to spend and dedicate to your new animal. These animals have been abandoned or badly treated and many will have bad tempers.
So it is very important that you give your animal masses of love and affection, and you don't just bring him home and leave him there whilst you go out to work.
A dog for Christmas you get from a shelter will need reintegrating into the home, and you won't be in a position to leave him alone, or with other dogs immediately.
